Punta de Mita
Calm water, surf breaks and the Marietas Islands
Punta de Mita sits at the northern tip of Banderas Bay. Part of it is an upscale gated resort area, but the original fishing village, El Anclote, is open to everyone and is where most day visitors spend their time: palapa seafood restaurants, surf schools, boat captains and a calm, swimmable beach.
Things to do
- Take a boat to the Islas Marietas national park, famous for the Hidden Beach (access is limited and must be with a licensed operator, so book ahead)
- Learn to surf or paddleboard at El Anclote or the La Lancha break
- Snorkel the reef at Playa Carricitos
- Watch humpback whales in winter (about December to March)
- Have a long seafood lunch at the beachfront palapas
- Hike Monkey Mountain for big views over the bay (a half-day outing)
- Spend a lazy afternoon at a beach club with a day pass
Nightlife
Honestly, Punta de Mita is quiet at night. Evenings are about sunset drinks and dinner by the water, with a couple of relaxed bars that sometimes have live music on weekends. If you want dancing and a late night, Puerto Vallarta is the place.
