Day trip · Tepic, Nayarit

Tepic

Nayarit's capital: museums, plazas and real local life

Tepic is the capital of Nayarit, set in a cool green valley inland from the coast. It's a working Mexican city rather than a beach resort, with a walkable historic center, good museums about the state's indigenous cultures and great market food.

From Rincón de Guayabitos: About 95 km, roughly 1½–2 hours by car. Julio picks you up at your hotel and drives you there and back.

Things to do

  • See the twin-towered, neo-Gothic Cathedral on the Plaza Principal
  • Visit the Regional Museum of Nayarit for its pre-Hispanic shaft-tomb archaeology
  • Tour the Casa Museo Amado Nervo, birthplace of the famous poet
  • Learn about Wixárika (Huichol), Cora and other peoples at the Museum of the Five Peoples
  • Look at the history murals inside the Government Palace
  • Climb the Loma de la Cruz hill and park for views
  • Eat local dishes at the city market
  • Add the Santa María del Oro crater lake for a scenic afternoon

Nightlife

Tepic has a local nightlife: bars, a piano bar and a few clubs and live-music spots (often banda) that are busiest Friday and Saturday. It's geared to locals and students rather than tourists, and weeknights are fairly quiet. On a day trip you'll likely be heading back before things get going.
